Designing a digital instrument cluster for a self-driving car. This ideation project explores possibilities how the HMI can change when the driver turns into a passenger. The project covers the in-car experience for control, navigation, communication and entertainment.
The automotive industry is on the verge of major changes and the way we use cars will change fundamentally. This ideation project creates the scenario that in the future self-driving cars will represent the majority of public transportation and that they will be used primarily in a shared manner.
The research revealed that digital instrument clusters of today just emulate common analog controls for driving or operating a car. However, an autonomous vehicle could focus more on information and communication with the respective passenger by automatically establishing a connection with his or her smartphone to provide a very personal traveling experience.
